Australia 5-0 Malaysia: Holger Osieck's men ease past overawed opposition in five-star friendly showing
Australia eased to a 5-0 win over Malaysia in Friday's international friendly in Canberra, with Joshua Kennedy and Alex Brosque hitting a brace apiece. Malaysia, ranked 147th in the world, were never expected to provide much of a contest and it only took three minutes for the Socceroos to open the scoring, with the visitors appearing overawed and well out of their depth.
Luke Wilkshire opened the scoring after Rhys Williams unselfishly cut the ball back for the Dinamo Moscow man to tap home from close range. Despite Australia's early dominance they didn't add to their tally until 33 minutes in, although they had a host of chances to do so.
The second came through Nagoya Grampus striker Kennedy - currently the top scorer in the J-League - who calmly slotted home after Neil Kilkenny's
Six minutes later, Michael Zullo cut in from the left flank, before Matt McKay and Kennedy combined to set up for Shimizu S-Pulse striker Brosque to lash home from an angle.
Kennedy added a fourth on the stroke of half-time with a cushioned left-foot finish from Williams' cross from the right wing. The Nagoya man didn't get a chance to complete his hat-trick after he was substituted at the break by boss Holger Osieck.
The second half had fewer highlights, with Australia easing up while continuing to stifle Malaysia's star-striker Safee Sali.On 69 minutes, Brosque added the fifth when afforded far too much time to turn on the edge of the box before firing a sharp shot past Malaysian keeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat.
Rangers midfielder McKay should've added a sixth for Australia when he headed substitute Adam Sarota's back-post cross over the crossbar. But by then it didn't matter, as his side had already cruised to a comfortable friendly victory which sets them up nicely for Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Oman.
